Carla D. Brown
Ms. Brown, of Fairfax County, Virginia, earned her undergraduate
degree from the University of Virginia in 1996 and received her law
degree from George Mason University School of Law in 1999. Ms. Brown is
currently admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the
District of Columbia, and Maryland. Ms. Brown is also admitted to
practice in the federal trial courts in Virginia and the District of
Columbia, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth
Circuit.
In 2009, 2010 and 2011, Ms. Brown was recognized in Super Lawyers
magazine as a Virginia Rising Star. Ms. Brown has litigated cases in
state and federal courts throughout Virginia, as well as in the District
of Columbia. Ms. Brown handles contractual matters, including the
negotiation and review of severance agreements, covenants not to
compete, and employment agreements. Ms. Brown also counsels employees
who are subjected to workplace harassment, discrimination, and
retaliation. Verdicts Ms. Brown has obtained on behalf of her clients
include Grissom v. The Mills Corporation, Civil Action 06-961 (E.D. Va.
2007) (Sarbanes-Oxley wrongful termination, breach of contract, and
defamation per se - $459,566 judgment, fees and costs awarded). Reported
decisions include: Zeng v. EDS, 2007 U.S. Dist LEXIS 44412 (June 12,
2007) (denying a motion to dismiss the plaintiff's claims of tortious
interference and intentional infliction of emotional distress); Duckett
v. District of Columbia, et al., 2006 U.S. App. LEXIS 32523 (D.C. Cir.
May 23, 2006) (dismissing claims against physician who was falsely
accused of violating the civil rights of an inmate). Recent
presentations by Ms. Brown include: "Strategic Thinking in Settlement
Negotiations" (the Virginia Bar Association Thirty-Sixth Annual
Conference on Labor Relations and Employment Law, October 6, 2006);
"Careers in Labor & Employment" (D.C. Bar Labor & Employment Section,

Employment Law and Ethical and Professional Mediation Guidelines to
Resolve Cases Early" (Fairfax Bar Association, Las Vegas, October 6,
2009); "Plaintiff's Perspective: What's the Plan? Issues That Arise in
State, Federal, or ADR Forum" (Virginia Nineteenth Annual Employment Law
Update, May 13, 2010). Ms. Brown is a member of the Virginia Bar
Association, the Metropolitan Washington Employment Law Association, the
Fairfax Bar Association, the Northern Virginia Black Attorneys
Association, and the Federal Bar Association. She is also a Barrister of
the George Mason American Inn of Court.
